Schools are no strangers to surveys. Almost all schools use surveys in a variety of ways, most commonly to gain:

  • the views of pupils about their educational experience;
  • the views of parents/carers about the educational provision and its impact upon their children.

These can of course also be carried out across a group of schools, but there is opportunity to widen the scope and use of surveys to inform practice and operation within and across the group. Areas that could benefit from surveys in MATs and groups are detailed below.

Staff Welfare

Staff are the most valuable asset any organisation has. This is as true for a cluster or MAT as for a single school, possible even more so. Staff who felt supported and valued in a school may well feel more distanced and disconnected within a MAT. Thus, gaining the views of staff across the MAT on how they feel their wellbeing is fostered will be vital in ensuring they have a clear view about strengths and areas needing attention.

Investing in the health and wellbeing of staff raises morale, increases motivation, and addresses recruitment and retention issues.

Our Staff Wellbeing Survey provides you with clear and detailed feedback of staff opinions on:

  • The cluster/MAT culture
  • Their roles and responsibilities
  • Relationships within the MAT
  • The management of change
  • Overall workplace experience

Professional Learning

One of the benefits of forming a group or MAT are the opportunities for capacity building, professional learning and career pathways that arise and can be offered from being part of a larger organisation. Carrying out a survey which provides information on these aspects will provide information about the impact of professional learning and training activities and ensure that future provision can be more effectively targeted to need.

This is an area which is vital to the smooth running of an organisation but is often neglected. In the formation of a group or MAT, staff may feel most vulnerable to the centralisation of services. A survey of this group can focus on areas such as:

  • How the individual school systems and processes fit in with the MAT
  • Workload
  • Efficiency and effectiveness
  • Communication

The cost of surveys for your group or MAT will vary depending on the number of schools involved and the surveys you wish to undertake.
